President Trump accepted the Republican Party’s nomination for a second term on Thursday, joining a general-election contest against Joseph R. Biden Jr. that he and his party cast this week as a crusade against left-wing ideology and violent social disorder, fought against the backdrop of a virus that Republicans largely described as a temporary handicap on the economy.

In his acceptance speech Thursday night, President Trump declared: “Biden is a Trojan horse for socialism.” Vice President Mike Pence, in his own acceptance speech, said: “Joe Biden would be nothing more than a Trojan horse for the radical left.” Presidential lawyer Rudy Giuliani proclaimed: “He’s a Trojan horse with Bernie, AOC, Pelosi, Black Lives Matter and his party’s entire left wing just waiting to execute their pro-criminal, anti-police, socialist policies,” wrapping together Mr. Biden with liberal Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sen. Bernie Sanders, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and socialism in one sentence.
